To Rockies fans, Tom Helmer was more than a broadcaster. They want him back.

It’s been a season worth forgetting for the Colorado Rockies and their fans.

What many people haven’t forgotten is that Tom Helmer was more than just a broadcaster. Prior to Root Sports Rocky Mountain’s decision not to renew his contract, Helmer was a crucial link between the network and the Rockies faithful.

Helmer’s antics forged a genuine bond between himself and the good people who opt to spend their disposable incomes to attend Rockies games. Tom took time to shake hands, pose for photos with families and generally ingratiate himself to people. Those efforts have paid dividends for Helmer, even though he has yet to land a full-time broadcast gig. Few regional personalities have earned the kind of loyalty Helmer continues to enjoy. An entire season of baseball has passed and fans still pine for him.

This coming Thursday, September 27, when the Rockies play the Cubs in their final game of the year at Coors Field, a group of Rockies fans intend to protest Helmer’s departure one more time. We encourage attendees to join them. “Rockpile Ranter” and “Rox Addict” are organizing an effort to get fans to bring their “bring back Helmer” signs to the game. Root Sports will be as careful as they can be not to let the signs show up on TV, but the more signs show up the less likely they will be to censor them completely.

For the record, we’ve softened on Joel Klatt’s performance. He’s done just fine – and he works his tail off. This isn’t an anti-Klatt thing. It’s a pro-Helmer thing – and we support it fully.
