Rockies destroy pitchers, blame them for it.

Colin D. | June 19, 2012

The Rockies organization must stop blaming their pitchers (and their ballpark) for their nightmarish performances and get busy solving problems.

Bob Apodaca needs to be shit-canned and fast.

Instead, the Rockies are reportedly looking to move another pitcher that they have effectively ruined out of town.

Jeremey Guthrie, who’s ERA in Baltimore over four season was 3.7, 3.63, 5.04, 3.83 and 4.33 is reportedly on the chopping block. He’s apparently been offered to Toronto for a plate of poutine after being destroyed by the Rockies’ coaching staff. His ERA this season in Colorado? 7.02.

Wonderful.

This guy was just fine before he came here. Bob Apodaca’s ineptness and inability to bolster the confidence of his staffers has claimed yet another victim. Colorado is a revolving door for pitching talent. Nobody sticks around long.

We all blame Coors Field. The organization does, too. But, the fact of the matter is that opposing pitchers have to pitch there, too, unless the Rockies are on the road – in which case they don’t have to, either. It is, as they say, a level playing field.

Jason Hammel, who the Rox jettisoned in order to acquire Guthrie, is kicking ass and taking names for the Orioles. He allowed only one hit against the Braves. And Matt Lindstrom, who was included in the deal, has an ERA of 1.29 in 14 innings of work, according to Purple Row.

Pitchers leave and they get better. They come here and they suddenly become terrible. Blame the altitude all you want but there has to be more to it than that.

Apodaca has been the pitching coach here since 2002. He’s been here for a DECADE! And what have the Rox had to show for it? A list as long as your arm of arms that have left Colorado frustrated and resurected their careers somewhere else.

The Monfort Brothers’ willingness to hang onto Dan O’Dowd is head-slapping enough – but the fact that Apodaca is still here is mind-bending.
