Local Yokel: Les Shapiro has lost his damn mind.

John Reidy | January 17, 2012

We revive our “Local Yokel” feature with some concerns about Les Shapiro’s mental health.

Seriously Les, just drop it. We’ve heard enough. The disingenuous pandering to Tebow haters and lovers alike has grown as stale as that taquito rolling endlessly in the 7-11 incubator.

I briefly lifted my ban on listening to the non-local, ESPN radio the other day and I happened to stop on Les and JoJo’s show. In the interest of full disclosure, I forgot my ipod and was stuck in my truck for two hours. Principles go out the window when you’ve got nothing to listen to. So I tuned in and got fished in by one of Les’s tried and true radio home runs: ripping on Tebow.

Shapiro was angry. Or so he wanted you to believe. You could practically hear him gritting his teeth as he said Tebow couldn’t play and the Broncos didn’t really want him even after the Das EFX (Elway, Fox, Xanders) presser, where John Elway claimed otherwise. And then Mike Klis came on and, as he usually does, made Les look a little stupid by completely refuting that notion. Klis should know right? He was there. Les? He wasn’t there. Because baiting people to call into your radio show takes preparation apparently.

And that’s the huge rub against Les. He’s a very knowledgeable sports guy who is tarnishing his reputation by riding his hate for Tebow into the ground. We all have eyes, so you can’t really argue that the QB struggled against New England. But the level of animosity Shapiro dishes out on the Teebs can’t be real.

And that’s why I think he’s faking it to get people to listen to his show.

I’m sure it happens every day. Merrill Hodge rescued himself (thanks to us) from obscurity by bashing Tebow and now, for better or for worse (probably worse), he’s always someone we will pay attention to when there’s something Tebow related to jaw about.

Shapiro is doing the same thing. I’m sure he doesn’t really care one way or the other if Tebow is good or bad. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if the Broncos were good, because it gives him something to talk about. But when Tebow is bad, it gives him even more to talk about.

Radio people tell me all the time that if you don’t have a strong opinion, no one will listen to you. Les Shapiro’s opinion is strong alright. But it’s phony. And when the Tebow talk dries up as we head into the off season, he may have to invent something else to be mad about.  Stay tuned. Or not.
