It looks like the MacKinnon pick is working out for the Avalanche

I was a Seth Jones guy. I was absolutely convinced that the Avalanche should use the first pick in the NHL draft to select him. I spent hours watching YouTube videos highlighting Jones’ skills and I was fired up at the prospect of his joining the Avs. The Avalanche needed help on defense and I was convinced that Jones was the guy to provide that help for many years to come. I had heard glowing things about the other candidates but I wanted Jones.

When the Avalanche selected Nathan MacKinnon on draft day I was disappointed. When I am wrong I can admit it.

Gabriel Landeskog won the NHL’s “Rookie of the Year” award, the Calder Memorial Trophy, back in 2012. Nathan MacKinnon is an easy leader in the club house to do the same in 2014. The youngster has 14 goals on the season, including two he scored last night, along with 14 assists. Only Matt Duchene has more impressive stats. His plus / minus so far this season is 6. For comparisons sake, Seth Jones has 4 goals on the year and his plus / minus is a dismal -12.

Colorado is very likely to make the post-season this year and MacKinnon will have contributed in a very real way to that pursuit. He is an exciting player – fast, fun to watch and great on a pair of skates. He is the kind of player that makes his team mates better – and that’s exactly why the Avalanche wanted him.

MacKinnon has made an immediate impact for the Avalanche. He is already one of the squad’s core players – the youngest of a young group. The future looks very bright for the Colorado Avalanche thanks in part to the selection of Nathan MacKinnon with the first pick in the 2013 NHL draft.
