Even AJ Smith thinks the Chargers are losers

Colin D. | June 16, 2012

“When you don’t win a world championship, are you not a loser?” – AJ Smith

The long-time General Manager of the San Diego not-so-Super Chargers has been flapping him gums plenty lately. He recently said sarcastically that he hoped that the Broncos would not simply run away with the AFC West this coming season.

Now he tells the San Diego Union Tribune that his team is a loser – and so is he.

Smith is critical of the job he has done and that he has failed to lead a talented Chargers team to a Championship: “When I sit back and assess myself, I’m disappointed,” he told a reporter. “Nine years and no world championship. Five trips to the postseason and five failures, and I don’t like it. It’s what drives me.”

As Broncos fans we can’t really argue with Smith. The Chargers have been poised to strike in the playoffs many, many times only to fall short of expectations. Their “window” has been open for the better part of the past decade although it may now be closing. San Diego’s strangle-hold on the AFC West has wained.  After owning the division title for what seemed like an eternity, the Chargers have not won it either of the past two seasons.
