Eric Goodman trolls ’em good, but at what cost?

John Reidy | February 5, 2014

It certainly wasn’t flattering to include them in Goodman’s hit piece on how shitty Bronco fans are for not enjoying the steel-rod-up-the-urethra-ass-kicking that was the Super Bowl, so it begs the question: What the fuck Eric Goodman?”

Look, some things were said in the heat of the moment during the Denver Broncos Super Bowl debacle that we all wish we could take back. Or maybe not. The immediacy of social media makes for complicated interactions when you fire off a missive while gripped with rage as your favorite football team, the guiding light of a whole region, quietly pees down its leg in front of a billion people.

So it’s bizarre and confusing why a local radio host and columnist would single out a couple of emotional fans and use them as an example why some Broncos fans are complete and utter morons. In Eric Goodman’s latest column for Mile High Sports, he paints, with the widest brush possible, Broncos fans as trash people who use Twitter to illustrate just how ignorant they all are. Fair point I guess. Plenty of fans react in ways that they never would in person and make complete asses out of themselves. But these particular fans that Goodman decided to run up the flagpole as the worst human waste on the planet, is truly baffling.

And I know this because I know these two fans personally. Well, one I know personally and the other I know fairly well solely through my interaction with him on Twitter. @OpieGoneMad and @guyincognito are big time Broncos fans and they were upset, as we all were, during the major bed-pooping session that was the Super Bowl. Twitter interactions are sometimes taken out of context whether from not knowing the person or simply not getting their sense of humor. This happens a lot. But in this case, Goodman’s column and the singling out of these two fans is utterly baffling because of one simple reason: He knows them.

I’ve seen @OpieGoneMad and @guyincognito pleasantly interact with Goodman for awhile now, so it’s really odd that they ended up in the piece. Did they say something outrageous? Kind of. But so did everyone who suffered through even a tiny bit of this Broncos mess. My first thought was, “why not just quote people anonymously, especially if it’s people you know and talk to regularly on Twitter?” It certainly wasn’t flattering to include them in Goodman’s hit piece on how shitty Bronco fans are for not enjoying the steel-rod-up-the-urethra-ass-kicking that was the Super Bowl, so it begs the question:

What the fuck Eric Goodman?

Was he too lazy to look up any more Twitter accounts for material to use? Did these guys, who have seemingly supported him over the years not pay enough deference to his idea that we just sit back and take the loss like good little fans? Did they do something to personally offend him? Or is this just some good old fashioned trolling that would get a reaction out some everyday Twitter users? No offense to these two, but there were plenty more high profile people on Twitter saying the same thing – was Goodman afraid to take them on? That would seem like the logical choice if you want maximum trollage.

No matter how you divide the reasons up, it’s still very strange. I understand the backlash against Broncos fans being overly upset. And you can make a good case against the overreactions of a lot of people after Sunday. But to single out just a few select fans (ones that the writer is familiar with) is as lazy as Peyton’s offensive line was the other day.

So congrats? I guess Goodman just lost two listeners/readers. Because who else wants to interact with a guy who will just take what you’ve said and turn it against you without getting an explanation. I guess this is what counts as journalism these days: lethargic stabs at people who don’t have the outlet to defend themselves. And just like the Broncos, it’s bitterly disappointing.
