Did Peyton nail the coffin shut on Norvy?

Colin D. | October 18, 2012

That comeback on Monday night was incredible – but will it backfire on the Broncos? Will the Chargers fire Norvy!?

Head coach Norv “Norvy” Turner and General Manager AJ “Lord of no rings” Smith of the San Diego Chokers Chargers have been on the hot seat for what seems like forever. The duo is constantly criticised for what’s it has failed to produce with the scads of talented players that have come through Qualcomm Stadium since Norvy came over from Oakland.

Fans have watched their favorite guys … Ladainian Tomlinson, Junior Seau, Vincent Jackson … find success in other cities, abandoned by the Chargers before their times were up. And the men who replaced them have been doomed to mediocrity by a system that demands nothing less.

The Chargers always seem to go nowhere fast.

They’ve won the division a few times. Heck, up until 2009 it looked like they owned the AFC West. But they haven’t done jack since then. Three consecutive second-place finishes is all the Chargers have to show for all the money owner Dean Spanos has spent since Obama was elected.

Their recent impossible loss to the Broncos is only the latest pock wound on Norvy’s flappy neck – but it is an open one – a pussy, weeping, lesion that Spanos can smell from across the room. It’s got to be getting uncomfortable for both of them.

But we love Norvy. Broncos fans delight in watching him fail and squirm. Coupled with whiny Philip Rivers, Norvy is as entertaining as a loveable loser can be. And we get to see him twice a year!

I shudder the think that Peyton Manning might have been his undoing.

The newspapers and blogs, radio stations and television outlets are all hammering Norvy’s coffin shut. Broncos fans, let’s hope the Chargers turn it around and hang onto second place in the West. That’s been good enough to keep Norvy around this long. Maybe it will be good enough again.
