Denver aside, it’s a Wild, Wild AFC West

Colin D. | November 1, 2010
It’s another chilly morning in Denver, Colorado but around the AFC West things are beginning to warm up.

It’s unlikely that the Broncos can finish anywhere but in the basement of the AFC West.  With half thier games in the books Denver is 2-6.  Their remaining schedule offers little promise of a rally.br />

The rest of the division, though, is beginning to get interesting.br />

The Kansas City Chiefs are out front with a record of 5-2 having held off the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead in week 8.  Their two losses came in back to back weeks against AFC South contenders Houston and Indianapolis – each of whom the Chiefs played closely.   K.C. is 1-0 within their division, having toppled the Chargers in week 1.  They face the Raiders next week in a critical division showdown.br />

The Oakland Raiders sit in second place at 4-4 having defeated their last two opponents, Denver and Seattle by a combined score of 92-17.  With the exception of their week 1 loss to Tennessee, the Raiders have been on the losing side of very close games.  Nobody is walking all over this team.  Darren McFadden is quickly becoming the superstar most folks thought he would be and Tom Cable, the man who was never meant to be coach, is coaching his ass off.  The Raiders are 2-0 in the division, having edged the Chargers and bitch-slapped the Broncos.br />

The San Diego Chargers appear to be making their typical Norv Turner era mid-season turn around.  They toppled the Titans at home on Sunday to improve to 3-5 after having lost by a field goal in each of their two previous games.  The Chargers travel to Houston in week 9 for a tilt with the high-flying texans in a game the Chargers need to win to keep pace in division.  After that they take their bye then host your Denver Broncos.  The Chargers are 0-2 in division and have a sizable hole to climb out of if they are to earn a playoff berth. br />

It’s doubtful that any AFC West team will be a wildcard.  In order to reach the post-season, the Chiefs, Raiders or Chargers will need to win the West.  With the majority of the division games yet to be played, and only the Broncos looking like an easy kill, the remaining 9 weeks of the season look to be a wild ride for teams in the AFC West. br />

Based on what I have seen recently, I believe that it comes down to a no-horse, two-team race for the Division championship between Oakland and K.C..  I’ll give the edge to whichever of them wins next week.  ‘Should be a fun one.
