Sports radio in Denver is a lot like the weather. If you don’t like it just wait awhile and it will change.
Already there have been significant recent changes to the lineups at 102.3 ESPN and at 104.3 the Fan. Now the mix is changing at Mile High Sports AM1510 FM93.7 where station manager Joshua Pennock has been busily shuffling the deck. Beginning on September 30 the whole scene will be different there.
Mondays – and all weekdays after a Broncos game MHS will begin the day with the new First Bank First Take show with Zach Fogg and Josh Pennock breaking down the game from the day before. Gone is “Morning Edge”, which vaporized from the airwaves about three weeks ago.
Normal weekday broadcast periods will still begin with the Press Box with Peter Burns, Mark Kiszla, Oren Lomena and Brandon Krisztal. The Press Box is as much a Denver Post product as it is a MHS product. It is streamed as live video at the Denver Post web site and the broadcast originates from the Post’s building. The MHS studio is empty during the Press Box time slot, with only the board operator physically present for the show. The Press Box is arguably Denver’s most popular morning drive sports talk show, although the Fan Morning Show with Vic Lombardi, Nate Lundy and Mike Evans also does well.
A new program will air on MHS from 9-11. This show will feature friend of the Fancast Zach Fogg and former Buffs blogger Reed Marks, senior editor for “Cover 32”, MHS’s answer to Bleacher Report for the NFL. This duo has worked together before, though late at night. I am optimistic that the new show will be a very nice alternative to listening to Sandy Clough at the Fan. At the very least it will give me something to switch over to that’s not Morning Mayhem – a show I could never get into but seemed to have a loyal listener base that understands it’s “inside joke” appeal.
Gil Whitely will carry the water from 11-noon with his unique blend of music, movies, trivia and sports. Whitely has forgotten more about this city than any of us will ever know but his voice makes him an acquired taste. I might be Gil’s biggest fan.

For the uninitiated, Irv and Joe have been broadcasting together for over thirty years and their comfort with one another is one of the charms of their show. Irv and Joe know everybody across the Colorado sports landscape.
Irv and Joe will now be followed by Danny Williams and Marcelo Romano, the former hosts of Morning Mayhem, from 2-4 PM which means they will overlap time slots at the other stations. From three PM on they will be on opposite the power shows in town – the Drive with Big Al and Dmac and The Locker Room, each of which are on from three to six. It will be interesting to see how much this show changes versus it’s morning rendition. It’s likely that, despite claims by the hosts that it’s the top rated show at the station, its listeners will be more likely to wander about the dial now that it’s not on opposite Clough. Morning Mayhem was, if nothing else, the polar opposite of Clough’s show, which probably helped attract less cerebral listeners.
The most exciting change comes at the 4-6 pm slot where Eric Goodman, former host of “Drive time” teams up with radio veteran Lance Britton, MHS’ most dashing host, and former CU Buff and Denver Bronco Mike Pritchard. Pritchard has radio and play-by-play experience and will now be on air opposite Alfred “Big Al” Williams at the Fan. The new afternoon drive show should provide MHS with some punch is the most important of time slots.
Renaud Notaro then takes the studio over from 6-7 PM. His show, the Renknowitall is a favorite among Denver sports media people. It’s a laid back sports show with a slant toward comedy and music. I should point out that I am Renaud’s co-host on Thursdays.
Brandon “the Gladiator” Spano moves in from 7-10 PM in his newly lengthened slot. Spano one of the more talented talkers in town and his rants are stuff of legend. He is adding a video component to his program as well as maintaining a new “Brandon Spano Network” web site, complete with interns who write for him.
From 10-midnight it’s Denver Sports Nation with Dario Coria, Joshua Dover and Adam Kinney. DSN began as a podcast on Blog Talk Radio and grew into a weekend show. Now the fellows are moving onto weekdays which is very exciting. These guys are longtime friends of the Fancast and very entertaining radio hosts. It will be great to have them on every day.
