Our week one NFL picks VS the spread
Welcome back the South Stands’ annual NFL pickoff VS the spread. Our pickers are once again Producer Scott Stafford, John Reidy, our buddy Snyder and me – Colin Daniels. Each week we will pick every NFL game VS the spread and we will keep a running tally of our successes and failures. In the end one winner will emerge.
Here’s how we see it going down in week one.

Baltimore @ Denver (-9)
Holy moly. The Broncos are monster favorites at home against the team that sent them packing last season. The Ravens won the Super Bowl but still few people have picked them even to win their own division. Can the Broncos knock that Joe Flacco banner off of Mile High?
Colin’s pick: Denver -9
John’s pick: Voldemort +9
Snyder’s pick: Broncos +9
Scott’s pick: Baltimore +9
Buffalo VS New England (-10.5)
The thickest line of week one. The Bills must be pretty awful to be such huge dogs at home against a Pats team that nobody really knows what to make of. One team has a quarterback, the other team doesn’t. Vegas know the difference.
Colin’s pick: Buffalo +10.5
John’s pick: New England -10.5
Snyder’s pick: NE +10.5
Scott’s pick: NE -10.5
Tennessee @ Pittsburgh (-7)
The Steelers are a touchdown favorite over the Titans and Jake Locker at Heinz Field this weekend. Some folks believe that Pittsburgh is a sleeper to win the AFC this year. If that is to be the case they have to take care of their business against a crummy AFC South team.
Colin’s pick: Pittsburgh -7
John’s pick: Tennessee +7
Snyder’s pick: Steelers +7
Scott’s pick: TN +7
Atlanta @ New Orleans (-3)
The NFC South promises to be electric this season and the sparks start flying early as the Saints (who have their head coach back) host the high-flying Falcons in week one. This should be one of the best games on the schedule. Must see TV.
Colin’s pick: New Orleans -3
John’s pick: New Orleans -3
Snyder’s pick: NO -3
Scott’s pick: NO -3
NY Jets VS Tampa Bay (-3)
The Bucs won’t be favorites on the road many times this season but the Jets could be one of the crummiest teams in the league. Geno Smith should start at QB against Tampa and Josh Freeman. Meanwhile, Jets fans are counting the days until Rex Ryan gets fired.
Colin’s pick: NY Jets +3
John’s pick: Tampa Bay -3
Snyder’s pick: Bucs -3
Scott’s pick: Tampa -3
JacksonvilleVS Kansas City (-3.5)
The new-look Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid basically get a fifth pre-season game to extend their getting-to-know-you period. They travel to Florida to start the season against the woeful Jaguars. The Chiefs should have half as many wins as they got all of last season after just one game.
Colin’s pick: Kansas City -3.5
John’s pick: Kansas City -3.5
Snyder’s pick: Jax +3.5
Scott’s pick: KC -3.5
Cincinnati @ Chicago (-3)
This interesting matchup pits playoff hopefuls from the AFC and NFC. Chicago is being given the customary three points for playing at home but how Mark Trestman’s offense will perform remains a total mystery. Will Jay Cutler benefit from the scheme? Can his offensive line keep the Bengals out of his face? Much remains to be seen.
Colin’s pick: Chicago -3
John’s pick: Cincinnati +3
Snyder’s pick: da Bears -3
Scott’s pick: BEARS -3
Miami @ Cleveland (PK)
What does Vegas think of this horrendous matchup? They don’t think much of it at all. They’re calling it a “pick em” which technically favors the ‘Phins.
Colin’s pick: Miami
John’s pick: Cleveland
Snyder’s pick: Browns
Scott’s pick: Miami
CarolinaVS Seattle (-3)
It comes as no surprise that the Seahawks are road favorites in week one. They visit Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers, a team that’s not terrible but is not as highly touted as Seattle.
Colin’s pick: Carolina + 3
John’s pick: Seattle -3
Snyder’s pick: Seattle -3
Scott’s pick: Seattle -3
Minnesota @ Detroit (-4.5)
Adrian Peterson takes his Vikings to the Motor City in week one for a tilt with the favored Lions. The NFL’s reigning MVP will have the weight of the franchis on his shoulders again this season. Meanwhile, the Lions added Reggie Bush for more offensive punch in 2013.
Colin’s pick: Detroit -4.5
John’s pick: Detroit -4.5
Snyder’s pick: Detroit -4.5
Scott’s pick: Detroit -4.5
Oakland @ Indianapolis (-9.5)
It’s going to be a really, really long year for the Raiders. One of many. The losing begins week one when they visit Lucas Oil Stadium where they will get throttled.
Colin’s pick: Indianapolis -9.5
John’s pick: Indianapolis -9.5
Snyder’s pick: Indy -9.5
Scott’s pick: Indy -9.5
Arizona @ St Louis (-5)
Five points is an odd spread, but Cardinals at Rams is an odd game. Both are the odd teams out in a division that is likely to produce a Super Bowl participant. So, which also-ran will start of hotter? We’ll see on Sunday.
Colin’s pick: Arizona +5
John’s pick: Arizona +5
Snyder’s pick: Stl -5
Scott’s pick: AZ +5
Green Bay @ San Francisco (-4.5)
Here we go! Like Atlanta / New Orleans this game promises to bring the NFL crashing back into our consciousnesses. Aaron Rodgers VS Colin Kaepernick? Yes, please.
Colin’s pick: Green Bay +4.5
John’s pick: Green Bay +4.5
Snyder’s pick: SF -4.5
Scott’s pick: GB +4.5
NY Giants @ Dallas (-3)
The big Sunday nighter this week pits two NFC East front runners against each other as Eli and the G-Men test Romo and the Cowboys. In a division that will come down to the wire this game is a must-win already.
Colin’s pick: Dallas -3
John’s pick: Dallas -3
Snyder’s pick: G Men +3
Scott’s pick: Dallas -3
Philadelphia @ Washington (-3.5)
There are many, many questions yet to be answered that this game will address. How will Chip Kelly’s new offense look with Mike Vick driving for Philly? Is RGIII really ready to go? Tune intothis Monday PM tilt and find out!
Colin’s pick: Washington -3.5
John’s pick: Philly +3.5
Snyder’s pick: Skins -3.5
Scott’s pick: Philly +3.5
San DiegoVS Houston (-3.5)
The Texans are road favorites at San Diego. Why? Because the Chargers suck. But are they worse than the Raiders? Only time will tell.
Colin’s pick: San Diego +3.5
John’s pick: Houston -3.5
Snyder’s pick: Texans -3.5
Scott’s pick: Houston -3.5
