Are Cuddy’s days in Colorado numbered?
Michael Cuddyer representing Rockies Country nicely in last night’s All-Star Home Run Derby. He finished in third place behind Bryce Harper and some guy named “Cespedes”. He looked good out there – on a national stage – sporting his trademark smile. Good enough, in fact, that fans of other teams were probably picturing him sporting their gear.
It’s common knowledge that teams around Major League Baseball are showing interest in acquiring Cuddyer from the Rockies. His 94 hits, 18 doubles, 16 homers and .330 average make him a very attractive offensive addition for any squad. Colorado is stacked with bats and in desperate need of starting pitchers.
So will the Rockies trade Cuddy?
There’s a very solid chance that they will. The Texas Rangers have shown interest. Other teams that could pursue him include the Pirates, Reds, Rays and Yankees, according to Mile High Sports.
Whether the Rox are “buyers” or “sellers” in the post-All-Star playoff chase, trading Cuddyer could be a worthwhile strategy. He could be used to acquire the talent needed to make a push. Or, if the Rox determine that the post-season isn’t in the cards for this year, they could use him to stack up a few pitching prospects.
The problem is always that fans don’t trust the Rox’ brain-trust to deal a guy like Cuddyer and get value in return. Hopefully the team will play their cards right if it does decide to move Cuddy. He is in many ways “Mr. Rockies”. It would be beyond disappointing to see him traded away poorly.
