OH MY GOD!

The Denver Broncos today traded running back (and fan favorite) Payton Hillis and a couple future mid-round draft picks for - are you ready for this - BRADY F'N QUINN!?

Gotta hand it Josh McDaniels. Who could have imagined that he could find an even crappier QB than Kyle Orton to compete for the starting job here in Denver. He did. Quinn is an interception waiting to happen. It's doubtful that Quinn will win the job, though, as lousy as he is. He's more likely to represent an upgrade over Chris Simms at backup. At least that way he is relatively harmless. Still, it's painful to see this organization cast off a winner to bring in a loser.

At least the female fans will be happy. The kid is hot.

The wheels of justice turn slowly. This afternoon they finally rolled over Darrent Williams' killer.

"D-Will", as he was known to Broncos fans, "Daddy", as he was known to his kids, "Son", as he was known to his mother, Williams was slain on South Broadway three years and three months ago in a gangland style shooting that rang in the new year, 2008, with an unsettling "bang".

Today his killer has a name. Willie Clark.

Did Clark act alone - or were there multiple shooters? Was he a scapegoat? It doesn't matter now. History has spoken. The jury was unanimous. A very dark chapter in Denver history is closed. String him up. His sentence will be handed down on April 30.

Terry Frei's screenplay

Apparently he can write a better script than a woman because he doesn't have tattoos and funky hair. I'd give him a solid "C" for this bit of hokum. But then again, it's a true story, so how much did he really do? Good luck Terry. Can't wait to see what you wear to the Oscars when this gets made.

Isn’t it typical that the second Wojtek Wolski gets traded to the Phoenix Coyotes, he suddenly becomes Sidney Crosby?

I know Avs fans are wringing their hand over this but have no fear: Wolski will disappear yet again and Phoenix will be left holding the bag.

Any time a player gets traded from Denver,or leaves under a negative cloud, that player will have his best game of his career against Denver. Doesn’t matter the sport, if you left here in shame, circle the date on the calendar when you play your old team: it will be a career game.

Wolksi had to go. He wasn’t going to get in gear for the Avs and after this incredibly fortuitous late goal by him the other night, it will be the last you hear from him. I don’t know how Peter Mueller will work out,but if you have a player who refuses to recognize even a shred of his ability, well, he has to go.

I’m not trying to cut Tiger Woods any slack. Quite the contrary. I’ve always found him to be a total dick hole. So to see him taken down a notch with his admission of infidelity did give me a tinge of satisfaction. But his press conference Friday where he bared his android soul and apologized to his wife was a sad affair that I didn’t savor. Apparently it was something the rest of the world was enjoying and griping about. This was the headline on CNN.com shortly after: Tiger Woods apology: sincere or staged? How does “a little of both” grab you?

After the press conference was announced, Tiger was lambasted for the small event held for a select group of reporters, friends and family. When it was clear Tiger would just speak and not answer questions, the shit really hit the fan. “How dare he?” was the refrain. Yes, how dare he explain himself, after enduring months of absurd news coverage and speculation in a controlled environment that would only serve to make him look good? How indeed.

Tiger obviously never took a public speaking class at Stanford because he’s terrible at it. Then again, he hits a tiny white ball and makes millions so I’m sure it was a skill far down his list to perfect. The apology was completely canned bullshit and so stiffly delivered it was comical.He did admit to nearly all the things he was accused of with a string of animatronic concessions but if you expected more of a song and dance, you were probably disappointed. Then he went into a jag about Buddhism and how he had strayed from the teachings his mother imparted to him at a young age. He broke this gem off at one point: “A craving for things outside of our selves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security.” Bam. Sounds like closing time on a Saturday night for most of us. The whole thing was completely feeble, but what else do you need from the man?

Woods was ripped for reading the prepared statement as well.It was publicist vomit and he paged through it in a monotone that would have made a junior high debate club teacher cringe, but his robotic drone desperately tried to impart some sort of remorse for the pain he caused his wife and family. And this was shocking how? Tiger is a stiff. If you didn’t know that already you’ve been paying too much attention to his golf game and not his personality. Something we should all get back to. Put anyone through an embarrassing public fiasco and they’re going to choose their words carefully. Tiger is no different.Only when we start doinking every Chili’s waitress from here to Ft. Collins,we’re not standing in front of the world to deliver a lame apology.

And that lame apology was delivered in the midst of a handpicked apologists gallery. Another big no-no according to disgruntled internet commentators. But do you invite TMZ down to your press conference, one that will significantly shape how your life and career will move forward, just they can stick it to you one more time? The answer can only be no. The vampires who have fed off this story for the last three months are the last people you want there. They’ll still write the same negative shit so don’t waste the extra cheese tray.

Not everyone in the media was outraged over Tiger’s cagey press conference. This guy’s wife is going to have to start reading his text messages:

I don’t get the backlash because I thought the world was in love with Tiger Woods (crying Golf Channel reporter aside). It shows how little anyone really thought of him by the way he was treated in the press/internet(justifiably so) after this all broke. But the venom coming his way for actually standing up and taking his lumps is even more puzzling. In a society where we cream our jeans over a good redemption tale, you’d think Tiger Woods taking it on the chin over his indiscretions would be the feel good story of the year. Maybe Tiger felt that way too, but the reaction was pretty much the opposite.

Woods can’t win no matter what he says. His reputation (as a husband anyway) has been sullied and even though he has no one but himself to blame, it’s probably time for everyone to put away their indignation and save it for something that really matters. Because after all, at least didn’t find Jesus Christ like Fox News jerk Brit Hume suggested.Now that would have been really lame.

It's official. The Chargers have released L.T.

Nine years. That's how long LaDainian Tomlinson has been a thorn in the side of the Broncos. As the premier running back in the AFC West (and, some would argue, the entire league), L.T. has made many Sunday afternoon games tough to watch for those of us who cheer on the Orange and Blue. Today he is a Charger no more.

Tomlinson's legendary skills have faded. He has become a liability for the "Bolts", rushing for just over 700 yards at the starter last season. Still, it's sad to see him dumped like a sad sack of smelly jocks by San Diego. He's not ready to walk away on his own, though. He could have opted to retire. Instead, he will end his career with some other NFL team.

I think he will wind up with the Patriots. The guys over at the Mile High Report agree with me. It's a perfect spot for him to land. New England has helped a host of broken down backs find a few more years of productivity. Corey Dillon and Fred Taylor leap to mind. Perhaps L.T. could rotate into the offense there are provide his trademark "spark" with limited action.

Another night, another standout performance by and Avalanche rookie. Matt Duchene, who famously grew up an Av's fan, shot the puck twice and scored on both en route to a 2-1 victory over something called the Phoenix Coyotes. Duchene is on course for 30 goals this season. He leads all rookies with 20. "Dutchy" might just be the leader in the club house for the coveted Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's rookie-of-the-year.

It was another huge win for the Av's at Pepsi Center in front of another pathetic, early-leaving crowd. Craig Anderson stopped 31 of 32 shots.

Nuggets, Karl extend romance only one more year.

It's seems kind of odd that the Nuggets would offer George Karl a mere one-year contract extension, but they did. Most folks speculated that they would agree to three years. Blame the possible NBA player lockout. Nate Timmons over at Denver Stiffs put it this way: "this should come as no surprise if you have been following the dark cloud that is moving over the NBA"

Dark cloud, indeed.

Karl's new 4.4 million dollar salary represents a significant raise from his current deal at 3 mil per year. We certainly think he deserves it.

Is Stan Kroenke going to buy the Broncos?

Is Stan Kroenke going to buy the Broncos? Why not? He already owns the Av's, the Nuggets, the Mammoth, the Rapids, Altitude Sports and Entertainment, Tickethorse.com, Pepsi Center, Denver Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, The Paramount Theatre, Odeum Colorado and 30% of the English soccer club, Arsenal.

He already has his supple hands in the NFL, too. Kroenke holds 40% of the St. Louis Rams. For now. Reports have Stan selling his Rams interest to Illinois businessman Shadid Khan (no relation to Chaka Kahn). The deal is set to close this Spring. That would leave Stan's pockets freshly stuffed with cashola to offer up to Pat Bowlen, the current Broncos majority owner (who is rumored to be declining mentally in his old age).

Pro Football Talk tempers the rumors (which they are spreading) with this caveat: "We're not saying that the Broncos are for sale; we're saying that there's a rumor they're for sale. And we're speculating that Kroenke could be interested, especially if he's cashing out his chips in St. Louis."

Naturally, there could be no juicier story in all of Denver Sports than Pat Bowlen selling out. If Bowlen were to do so, though, there could be no better suitor in our eyes that Stan Kroenke. He's one of the better owners in all of sports.

Yes, it was the Atlanta Thrashers, but the Avs staged a comeback for the ages last night beating those same Thrashers 4-3 in OT.

The hero in OT? None other than young Kyle Cumiskey. A speed demon who, ironically enough, is slowly coming into his own out on the ice.

His goal is something you pull off in any one of the fine video games you play sitting on your couch. It has to be witnessed:

It's also the fastest goal ever scored by the Avs in OT. Awesome. Going to suck when the playoffs roll around and we can't get tickets.

Denver does Dallas

Oh, damn. 'Melo is back and the Nugs are full force. They put on a show tonight with 17K plus in attendance. The Mavericks, in their second game in a back-to-back, waived the white flag half way through the first. What fun.

Basketball porn. The Nuggets never trailed in this one. For the second time this season they played from out front from tip-off to buzzer. Johan Petro has 22 minutes. Let that sink in for a minute. Yeah. We're talking about an old school ass whoopin' here. Seven Nugs in double figures. They almost doubled Dallas' production in the 2nd period and just kept pulling away. It was like a drag race between a Kia and a 'Vette.

These Nuggets keep erasing doubts. They have their losses, don't get me wrong, but they have shown a propensity to step up huge in the biggest games. Gotta love that come playoff time.

Pepsi Center has been electric when the basketball guys have been in town. Tonight was no exception. There's no truth to the rumors that Kroenke Sports is actually locking fans in and forcing them to watch the Av's game.

Shanny and Romo: together again?

Could the raging 'roid freak seen here soaking Mike Shanahan in Gatorade be joining the Mastermind in Washington DC? Rumor has it that good old Bill Romanowski is headed East to serve as Shanny's strength and conditioning coach.

Romo himself confirmed the rumor on his Twitter page: "I guess it's now out in the news but I am indeed in Washington DC."

WHAT??

ProFootballTalk.com is asking some of the same questions that immediately popped into our heads like so many pills into Romo's gaping maw: "we wonder if the NFL will have an opinion on the possible hiring of an admitted steroid user and pill enthusiast for a job that puts him in charge of the conditioning of an entire team." Lord knows, Romo has a sure cure for anything that might ail the 'Skins players. How about a training room filled with hyberbaric chambers?

Will McDaniels nab McNabb?

Oh boy, oh boy. Reports are flying that the Eagles veteran QB, Donovan McNabb could be Denver bound. The Philadelphia Enquirer is reporting that three teams are aggressively pursuing a trade with Philly for number 5. All three start with the letter "B": Bills, Browns and Broncs.

The Westword's Michael Roberts all over the story. In today's "follow that story" column Roberts writes: "ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported that Denver's had multiple conversations with the Philadelphia Eagles about the availability of QB Donovan McNabb."

A Reader survey titled "stay or go" at the Enquirers web site demonstrates the fickleness of the Philly faithful. Over 65% of respondents want to see McNabb shipped out of town. We've said it before. We'll take him!

Sure, Donovan is 33 and probably past his prime. Unlike Kyle Orton, though, he is an accomplished QB who can lead a team from behind with his mobility and his arm. McNabb is a big play machine. Imagine the streaks down the sideline Brandon Marshall could make with McNabb hurling him the rock. Josh McDaniels could open up the playbook in ways his lack of trust in Orton will not allow. McNabb could change the entire complexion of the Denver offense.

Chances are McNabb to the Broncos is only a pipe dream. As the Philadelphia Enquirers Eagles blogger said today: "This last point canot be overemphasized. NOTHING IS ANYWHERE CLOSE TO HAPPENING."

Still, it's fun to fantasize.

Brees' Superbowl MVP prize like a punch in the nuts for SD fans

There are 1000 reasons for all football fans outside of Indy to feel good for the Saints after their Superbowl victory. We heard all week about the City of New Orleans and what a win might mean to them.

To Broncos fans, though, the sweetest thing about yesterday's game was the fact that Drew Brees, the former San Diego QB got his while the Chargers have still not made it to the dance without him.   Oh, sure, you can argue all day long that they made the right choice by retaining that prick Philip Rivers and letting Brees slip away but the Superbowl MVP trophy says otherwise.

ESPN's AFC West Blogger, Bill Williamson penned a column about sad San Diegans today entitled "Brees victory tough of some San Diego fans".    Here's a snippet "In the hours after Brees led New Orleans to its first Super Bowl win (which is one more than San Diego has) in which he was named the MVP, my mailbag was flooded by San Diego fans.   They are frustrated that Brees was allowed to leave San Diego after the 2005 season as a free agent. "

Hey, defending Champs, Who's house? Your house. Allow me to spell it for you, Lakers fans: B-I-L-L-U-P-S.

Staples Center rocked tonight. The celebrity fan base was out in force yet, still, the home team (one of two NBA lease-holders on the property) LOST to a determined Nuggets club tonight.   It was awesome. Altitude's Chris Marlowe and Scott Hastings agreed: this was the greatest Nugs win of the 2009 / 2010 season.

It was only loss number 4 at home for the Fakers. Get this: 126 points for the Nuggets. Yeah. It was a 3 point scoring extravaganza! Chauncey scored a new career high. 39 points. He was positively sick in the 3rd until Karl sat him down. The Nuggets scored 126 points! IN YOUR HOUSE! Even the maligned JR Smith dropped 27 on your asses. Bird had 15 rebs an Ty Lawson made you look slow.

Oh, yeah. By the way, our top player, our All-Star mega-star, Carmelo Anthony, was on the bench talking smack in his skivvies while Chauncey was making your top guy, Kobe Bryant look like an also-ran for the lead on Sports Center.

That was the most fun Nuggets game of the season to watch and that is saying a LOT. Final score: 126-113 Nuggets. IN L.A.!

Oh, man. The Avalanche are imploding. Nashville? Ugh. They couldn't even pick a specific Predator to name themselves after!

Colorado has dropped three of their last four. Was Kiszla right? Has the big mid-season slide begun? Are they headed towards oblivion?

We'll know more after four straight games at Pepsi Center coming up. Their 6-game win streak is way back in the rear view now. If the Avalanche can't get back on track soon they will have an even harder time attracting fans to Pepsi Center.

Speaking of fans, it's just plain sad that Nashville is doing a better job getting butts in seats than we are!

Mike Klis: Brandon Marshall open to playing for Broncos next season

We've said it before: we want to see Brandon Marshall (AKA BM "The Turd") back with the Broncos next year for no other reason that he is a stud.

Apparently, there is hope. According to a Mike Klis piece on the Denver Post web site, Brandon is willing to return. He even went so far as to humble himself. "Learning from last year and last offseason, I approached things unprofessional," Marshall told reporters in Miami. "This offseason I'm just going to go with the flow and just go in whatever direction the Broncos want to go."

He continues: "Last year I handled things totally wrong. I just looked at the business side of things and took things too personally. This year I'm going to remove myself from the situation and let the Broncos decide the direction we're going to go in as an organization."

Why the change in tone from a kid who was all but demanding a trade? Maybe it's because Brandon realizes that his best opportunities lie right here in good old Denver where Josh McDaniels is willing to allow Kyle Otron to throw to Marshall 21 times in a single game.

Apparently the Nuggets suck all of a sudden

Ouch. Listening to the various Sports talk radio shows on the AM and FM dials this morning I was pretty blown away by the harshness of the criticism I heard for the Denver Nuggets. They were embarrassed by the Suns last night to be sure. They were lethargic and slow; they played little defense and they couldn't wrestle away a defensive rebound to save their lives.

The Suns looked rested and ready. They outplayed Denver in every way.

Still, the Nugs have won 8 of their last 10 games, are securely seated in second place in the West (right behind the Lakers who they face on Friday night) and have been playing very well against the league's best teams night after night. I'm always surprised by the Radio guys' propensity to write a local team off as soon as they post a loss. The Nuggets, struggled last night, yes. They played an awful game. That doesn't mean that they deserve to get thrown under a bus.

Our pals over at Denver Stiffs said in their recap of last night's game: "it's clear that the Nuggets can't sustain that high level of play without Carmelo Anthony getting back on the floor." Yeah. We are talking about a team that his been without its superstar for six games in a row. How critical can we be? If anything we should be impressed that they haven't dropped more contests.

LaDanian DONE in S.D.

Pro Football Talk reports that longtime Denver nemesis LaDanian Tomlinson's time in San Diego is coming to an end after almost a decade as a Charger. The site states that: "LT's release will likely take place between March 1st and 4th. His $2 million roster bonus is due on the 5th."

The Phoenix Suns destroyed the Nuggets tonight at Pepsi Center. They were hot from "beyond the arc" and they got three of four shots at the basket every time they took it to the paint. They out-shot, out-rebounded and out-hustled our guys - simple as that. Phoenix played a great road game. They have now won 4 in a row.

The Nugs were short Carmelo for the 6th straight game. Their free-throw shooting stunk. They stood around on defense. They moved slowly on offense. There wasn't much positive about this loss. Final score: 109-97 PHX

ESPN broadcast the game but I stuck with Altitude tonight. Can't get enough Scott Hastings.

Favre's ankles are purple just like his helmet.

Gary Kubiac, longtime holder of Denver's clipboards, will have a job in Houston for the foreseeable future. The Texans have re-upped and signed him to a three-year contract extension. Kubiac, the most notable branch on Mike Shanahan's coaching tree, was rumored to be on the bubble after missing the playoffs yet again in 2009.

Can we start with a better Mascot?

I was bowling. "The battle of the Bars". I'm rolling for Zio Romolo's Alley Bar in the Highlands. My buddy Mike runs the joint. Fortunately, the TV's at Littleton lanes had the game on.

The Av's were kicking ass and taking names. They throttled Columbus 5-1 - a much needed win after their first three-game losing streak of the season. They remain in 6th place in the Western Conference. Nobody expected the Av's to enjoy this level of success - to be in the playoff hunt.

Nobody cares. I am stunned by the utter failure of the Kroenke folks to market this team! They could learn a lot from the Rockies. For one thing, they need a "rockpile" equivalent. There MUST be cheap seats for these games. The economy completely sucks. Nobody wants seats in section 358 and nobody can afford better ones.

The Av's need to take action. They need to tarp the entire top level and drop seat prices below. If they don't Pepsi Center will continue to be half empty while a playoff-caliber team filled with budding stars will continue to be ignored. That is just sad.

A pair of lower-level seats for an Av's game will run you $300 bucks unless you steal them on Craig's List or win them from a radio station. Are they insane? No sports fan can afford that. Assholes can afford that. They are spending their asshole dollars elsewhere, apparently. That leaves us fans.

Lower your prices, Kroenke.

This year's NFL "all-star" game has become a bad dream already and it doesn't even start for 36 hours. It sounded like a good idea at the time; moving the game from Hawaii to Miami, from the week after to the week before the Superbowl. I even liked it. Then it dawned on me that pretty much every star from every playoff team was likely to sit out. I was right. David Garrard, Pro-Bowl quarterback. Need I say more? What a stinking pile of crap that thing is going to be.

All I do on Sundays is watch football, listen to football, stream football, play fantasy football, talk about football, text about football and write about football. That's why I am befuddled. How can I possibly survive a Sunday without football? Gut it up. No way am I watching the Pro-Bowl.

This is what I will be doing. Hopefully 'Melo will be a "go" for the Nugs. I love to hate them Spurs. My 8 year old has been chomping at the bit for a trip to D&B's for months now so I will haul him down there after the Nugs play. If you have never been to one, picture a Vegas casino (no clocks anywhere) filled with video games, pool tables and skee-ball.

Avalanche drop second straight in regulation

Third period goals are killing the Avalanche. Less than a week ago they decimated the Stars 4-zip at Pepsi Center. Tonight they fell to the same squad in Dallas 3-2.

The Nuggets lost, too. I flipped back and forth between the games but mostly watched the Nugs. That left me relying on Adrian Dater's tweets to keep me up to speed on the action in tonight's NHL tilt. Here a a few of Dater's gems:

Foote returns tonight, Andy in net against #Stars. Avs might dress 7 D men tonight. Not decided yet
Stars 1-0. Sloppy play around Andy. Stastny line been asleep for three-plus periods now

Nugs stuck in the mud, OKC

Tonight the Nuggets played their ugliest game of the season tonight - possibly of the past couple of seasons. I kept expecting to see Jeff Bzdelik on the bench. Ugh. We're all better off just trying to forget about that one. After 8 straight wins, the Nuggets fell 101-84 to the ~~Seattle Supersonics~~ OKC Thunder.

Speaking of forgetting, JR Smith seemingly forgot that he was already on the hot seat. He jacked up bad shot after bad shot down the stretch.

Sadly, the Nuggets have to spend an extra night in OKC. The airport is closed thanks to a nasty winter storm. They will hope to travel to San Antonio tomorrow.

Kevin Durant was thunderous tonight with 30 points.
