Now that Jim Tracy has walked away, the Colorado Rockies are scrambling to replace him.

Whether they hire from within or bring in a candidate from the outside to fill the position is virtually inconsequential.

Manager is not the clubs most pressing need.

After a season during which the Colorado Rockies lost 98 games it should stand to reason that the manager of the team was at risk of being removed. Jim Tracy wasn't. By all reports, he was in line to remain the skipper, only with his his authority further usurped by a front office that he had so little faith in that he decided to instead walk away.

He told the Denver Post: ""Let me put it to you this way, I really don't feel that I am the right man for the job any longer."

Any longer? What could have possibly changed?
It's pretty clear that Geivett and O'Dowd, Colorado's bumbling GM duo, intended to take a more "active" role in trying to run the team and that Tracy wasn't comfortable being their fall guy anymore. Why else would he have walked away from the money and decided to uproot himself and look for another job? It wasn't because Tracy didn't love the players, the City or his role.
Jim Tracy knows that the Rockies are a sick, sick organization and that they aren't going to change.
Denver Post columnist Terry Frei feels that the onus is now on the Monforts to make sure that changes to the Rockies begin, not end, with Tracy's resignation. In his column today he asserts that they should "clean house" and try something new. However, Frei concedes that they won't. It would be too messy and too expensive. Ultimately, the Monforts want to make money - not spend it.
The fact that Jim Tracy was spooked away from the Colorado Rockies should tell fans that only dark days lay ahead. As loyal and as consistant as they are in support of their team, Colorado Rockies fans deserve so very much more.
Jim Tracy does, too. That's why he quit.

TWO great Denver Post stories:

Jim Tracy watch is in full effect

The Colorado Rockies are believed to be making their decision regarding Jim Tracy's future with the team as soon as today.

The Twitterverse is understandably on edge. Passionate Rockies fans are split, although a majority feel that Tracy should be canned.

Here are some recent Tweets from our timeline:

Is Jim Tracy the biggest problem? No. But he's in the mix. Some of the bad play is bad strategy. And that's on Tracy and his staff.

Jim Tracy should be fired. He's never been better than mediocre, has a lifetime losing record, bad in-field. But, he won't be.

Hope Jim Tracy keeps his job. Pretty hard to manage a team decimated by injuries and inept general management.

Hoping Jim Tracy keeps his job. He deserves another chance after suffering through a season that wasn't his fault.

Over/Under for Jim Tracy being the manager at the end of the day? My guess is that he is back. Hope I'm surprised.

The Denver Post actually said that Jim Tracy is "considered a strong in-game strategist" today. No, really.

Our beloved Jim Tracy, Manager of the Colorado Rockies meets with the brass today. He is the Rockies. We just need pitching!

Your long baseball nightmare is almost over

Wake up, Rockies fan, wake up. You've been having a bad dream. Open your eyes and let the light shine in. It's over.

Well, almost, anyway.

The Colorado Rockies do have seven games yet to play (yes, they still can lose 100), but just one at Coors Field. After that, they hit the road for three in LA and another three in Arizona. You can ignore those games, though. Go ahead n' pack up your Tulo jersey, your glove and your fitted hat until next year.

Speaking of next year, don't get too excited about it.

No team this bad is going to turn things around in a single off-season. They just ain't got the horses, Cowboy. Besides, nothing's going to change around here. Dan O'Dowd will still around in 2013, Jim Tracy, too. I know you hoped the Monforts would learn their lesson. We all did, kid.

Enjoy the Broncos' season. Get excited about you new, new, new-look Nuggets (JaVale McGee is a card, isn't he?) and forget about baseball for a while.

It will be here again before you know it - and you can dream again.

It's been a season worth forgetting for the Colorado Rockies and their fans.

What many people haven't forgotten is that Tom Helmer was more than just a broadcaster. Prior to Root Sports Rocky Mountain's decision not to renew his contract, Helmer was a crucial link between the network and the Rockies faithful.

Helmer's antics forged a genuine bond between himself and the good people who opt to spend their disposable incomes to attend Rockies games. Tom took time to shake hands, pose for photos with families and generally ingratiate himself to people. Those efforts have paid dividends for Helmer, even though he has yet to land a full-time broadcast gig. Few regional personalities have earned the kind of loyalty Helmer continues to enjoy. An entire season of baseball has passed and fans still pine for him.

This coming Thursday, September 27, when the Rockies play the Cubs in their final game of the year at Coors Field, a group of Rockies fans intend to protest Helmer's departure one more time. We encourage attendees to join them. "Rockpile Ranter" and "Rox Addict" are organizing an effort to get fans to bring their "bring back Helmer" signs to the game. Root Sports will be as careful as they can be not to let the signs show up on TV, but the more signs show up the less likely they will be to censor them completely.

Visit Rockile Ranter's blog HERE

For the record, we've softened on Joel Klatt's performance. He's done just fine - and he works his tail off. This isn't an anti-Klatt thing. It's a pro-Helmer thing - and we support it fully.

Road to 100 update. Let's do math.

(Image: Denver Post)

OK, South Standers. It's time for a little math.

Will the Rockies lose 100 games - or won't they? Well, they've lost 91 already. They have played 149 of 162 games. That leaves 13 games left to play. At their current winning percentage of .398 they should win 5 more games. That means they'll lose 8 more games for a total of 99.

If, however, that winning percentage should slip even slightly over the next few games, the Rockies will, indeed be on pace for 100 losses. I can almost hear the champagne corks popping over at Mile High Sports Radio.

IT'S PURPLE MONDAY, DAMNIT!

Why is everybody talking about the Denver Broncos?

It's Purple Monday, Damnit! Time to celebrate the pride of Denver - the Colorado friggin' Rockies - our scrappy, never-say-die, constantly-improving baseball team.

The Rockies deserve your our full attention on this Purple Monday. After all, they have kept their winning percentage over .400 for several weeks now. It's currenty .403 - which, with 23 games left to play, means they will tack another nine wins to their total of 56. That's 65 wins, jerks! And, with 65 wins,  they can ONLY LOSE 97 GAMES!

So take your "road to 100" talk and shove it where the sun don't shine. Because this is Rockies Country - even when the Broncos win.

Right?
