Everybody's an expert on the NFL Draft these days. Everybody wants to be John Elway. Everybody thinks they could do a better job. Everybody has it figured out.
Fans and talking heads alike are flipping out today that the Broncos traded out of their 25th pick in a deal with the New England Patriots of all teams. Nobody ever wins making deals with those devils! Elway must have been outsmarted!
I say chill out.
Give this draft time to develop. The fact of the matter is that no team will truly know how effectively they drafted in 2012 until 2014 or 2015.
For all anybody knows the Broncos are going to make a huge splash tonight.
Maybe that extra fourth rounder the Broncos got from the Pats will be traded to the Rams for Steven Jackson.
Maybe they will move around the board even more and acquire even more picks.
Maybe they know something we don't.
Maybe there are deals in the works.
Maybe they have a plan.
John Elway and company have earned the benefit of the doubt. Yes, this regime is handling only its second NFL draft. There's no real track record to look at in evaluating its evaluation of NFL talent . Still, we have clearly seen that, as far as winning is concerned, the Broncos are all-in. We should not be so quick to judge them or be critical of their decision not to draft a player in the first round.
Let this play out.
